Colleagues and Friends,
I'm sorry to say, but the Picaflor website took a hit and a lot of the content that I had updated in the last few months --- disappeared.
Technology!! These things happen.
So, I apologize for some of the gibberish you might find in some of the other categories. It will take me some time to update everything.
Regardless -- Happy May!!
I want to congratulate all my friends at Telemundo 47 for winning an Emmy for the special "Milagro En El Hudson"
Here's the link to see part of the 30 minute AWARD WINNING special!

Members and Friends,
I hope you are all well and enjoying all that Spring has to offer. I love Spring...everything feels and looks brand new. And new beginnings are wonderful.
This Newsletter is going out via Pica-Blog because I'm not ready with the Newsletter template.....starting in May it will be via the Newsletter (so, be sure to sign up for it!)
So, here is what's been happening....
-A lot of work recruiting. PMG is assisting in the search for talented professionals in front of and behind the camera (MTV, Tribune and CNN).
-The EP for MTV has informed me that they have sufficient amount of candidates for the project they are working on.....so, "thank you" to all who threw their hat in the ring.
-I'm disappointed at the response for Producers (there are opportunities for organized and creative folks out in Los Angeles). Please let me know or put me in contact with any person who would be interested.
-And looking for a Spanish speaking doctor (emergency, general medicine) to be a live guest, interviewee in a pkg for CNN en Espanol. It doesn't matter what market they are from as long as they speak Spanish correctly and feel comfortable in front of the camera.
-And finally --- looking for and English speaking journalist (woman) to host a national cable program. This person needs to be very comfortable producing stories out in the field as she does presenting them in the studio. Expert interview skills are a must.
Other than that....I continue to pitch ideas, network and help as many people as I can.
I also realize that there needs to be some clarity in what Picaflor Media Group is really all about....constructive criticism that I think is fair...look for that post or Pica-Blog in the near future.
For now, be well, be happy - be yourself!

I am a life time member of NAHJ (since 1994).
I am concluding my tenure as Vice President of Broadcasting.
I am the founder of the North Jersey Chapter.
Needless to say, NAHJ is an organization I believe in for all of the hard work it does to champion Hispanic journalists and students. It is a vehicle for me to share my experience with peers (in all stages of their career). I suggest you take the time to learn more about the organization and see not only how it can help you, but how you could help it.

This month Anchor Maggie Rodriguez of CBS's "The Early Show" hosted the Annual Scholarship Benefit in New York City. It is the most important fundraising event for students. Here is a link to pictures from that event: http://www.nahj.org/webroot/events/2010/publish_to_web/soundslider.swf
Please consider joining and donating to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. It's an investment that provides very valuable returns.

MTV is developing a new project (news related) out of NYC. A colleague has asked me to assist her in searching for: -Supervising Producer -Line Producer -Writers -Segment Producers -Story Producers -Production Assistants The Supervising, Line, Segment and Producers as well as the Writers should have experience in News and Entertainment. The initial project is for 6 months, but might be extended. I'm not 100% sure that there will be relocation expenses covered if you are out of the NYC metro area...so, keep that in mind. Please, contact me at hugobalta@picaflormedia.com for further details. Thanks!

Knowledge is power.
It is certainly the best tool to break through the barriers of discrimination (sometimes self imposed).
One such barrier in the Hispanic community is people with disabilities. Instead of keeping it "entre la familia" or say "pobrecito es enfermo"; it is imperative for the Hispanic community to learn that there are resources and experts ready and willing to help them, educate them that a disability does not have to mean an inability to do something about it.
With that in mind YAI Network is hosting it's sixth annual Latino Health Care Conference at the CUNY Graduate Center this Wednesday. Nearly 400 people are expected to attend and what they will walk away with is hopefully - the first step towards helping their loved ones with disability live full lives. For more information check out their website: www.yai.org
The keynote speaker at the event will be Mariela Dabbah. She is a popular Author, Speaker and Consultant on navigating the American system.
Mariela is a frequent guest expert on TV and radio shows on topics such as education, parent involvement in education, job search, Latina empowerment and career development. She has appeared on “Good Morning America,” “Today in New York,” “All things considered” (NPR), “Wake up with Whoopi” and is a frequent contributor to “Despierta América,” “Noticiero Univision con Jorge Ramos y Maria Elena Salinas,” “CNN en Español,” News 12, and numerous other local and national shows.Learn more about Mariela at www.marieladabbah.com Picaflor Media Group is proud to work with the YAI Network and proud and thankful for Mariela's participation in Wednesday's success.
